investigation continues... it's unclear with the officers involved with face criminal charges. the baltimore police department is getting a million dollars to hire 10 new officers. a special justice department office is providing the money. it's also giving hagerstown a quarter of a million to hire two officers... plus bladensburg and seat pleasant are each getting enough to hire one officer. the u-s attorney for maryland says the grants will help communities improve school safety. after a week- long delay, a private company has successfully delivered a shipment to the international space station. a capsule from "orbital science corp" pulled up to the i-s-s this morning. it's packed with a half ton of food, clothes, and other supplies for the six astronauts on board the floating lab. only one other private company has ever made

such a high- flying shipment. the space station is hovering about 260 miles above us. habitat for humanity celebrates 30 years of working hand- in-hand... with former president jimmy carter and his wife, rosalynn. every year since 19-84... the carters have spent a week building and renovating homes with habitat. next month... from october 6th through the 12th... they'll help complete projects in san jose, california, denver, colorado, new york city and union beach, new jersey. since being founded... habitat has helped build or repair more than 600-thousand homes -- and served more than 3-million people around the world. a kentucky judge spends his friday nights making stadium announcements for a high school football team. that may not sound impressive... until you realize he can't see the players, the field... or anything else. connie leonard introduces us to a blind football announcer with

some surprising insights on the game. i don't have any perspective of how things look but i have a lot of perspective of how things sound. for judge david holton being effective in court means: projecting, keeping your energy up...and your temper down. that's also true in sports. all right. arriving early for every western home game, the first and currently only blind judge in kentucky, holton is likely the state's only blind p-a announcer too. here you go. you're here. all right. we're in the house. the judge says when he was asked to "call his first game", he knew "who to call" and what to say. i need somebody to be my eyes. can you be my eyes? and i said yeah, what time and where do you want me to be? longtime companion and guide dog buddy isn't the only one who travels with holton. friend and attorney thomas patteson stays by his side. i'm basically a play-

by-play guy in his ear. carlos hernandez on the tackle. gain of one on the play; it's second- and-nine. brilliantly seemless. the crowd below has no idea holton has no view of the game. i can't see anything at all. it's going to be a first down. first down warriors! i try to get across what i would need to know if i were there in the stadium. holton played football as a boy until a tumor caused him to lose his sight...the press box...is as close as he's been to the game since. the toughest part? the pressure of "getting it right", just like his first years on the bench. i knew there'd be more scrutiny on me because i can't see. knowing he cares so much...and gives it his best effort ... makes his play by play partner pretty proud. it's satisfying to me when people down there don't know that there's a blind guy up there. that means we're doing it right. that means he's getting it right, which

is what's important to him. touchdown. touchdown warriors! judge holton was also invited to call a kentucky state high school football championship game back in 20- 11. it has been a big morning at the baltimore zoo....as some one thousand people showed up to support pathfinders for autism. the third annual run wild for autism 5k race and family fun run/walk kicked off there this morning. pathfinders was established in 2000 by parents of children who fall into the autism spectrum..... including baltimore orioles hall of famer b-j surhoff and his wife polly. amber miller has been at the event all morning and is streaming now live from the zoo where the run has just ended.. an awards ceremony wil follow where the winners will be announced---and there will also be fun door prizes. coming up...

to charge michael montgomery in the killing of jonathan denver. denver's father is expected to make the plea outside giant stadium this afternoon prior to the start of the game. it's thought someone may have recorded the fight on a cell phone. prosecutors have charged a fifth person in the deadly shooting that left a young chicago boy with a bullet wound. the latest charges came on the same day young people in the neighborhood returned to the park where the crime happened for a peace event. earlier this month witnesses say several gunmen opened fired on a basketball court full of people... 13 were injured, including a three-year-old child who was shot in the face. doctors say the bullet missed his brain and he's expected to survive. police believe more arrests are possible. more money, more problems. at least that's the story from one recent powerball winner. overwhelmed with calls ranging from long lost relatives to tv executives asking him to star in reality shows... this lottery curse is not so unusual, sometimes turning winners into losers. jack whittaker won $314 million dollars in 2002. two years later his family life was in shambles and he was arrested twice for drunken driving. abraham shakespeare of florida was murdered after winning $31 million dollars. when you win $100 million all of the sudden, you're $100 million richer than anyone you know.. it makes it hard to keep those old family and friends connections. seeley has this advice for the mystery winner of the recent $400 million powerball... "just disappear...get lost while you still can.." but you don't have to feel too sorry for willie, he got to quit his job, buy new cars, pay off his mortgage, and buy a log cabin...

the house voted early today on a spending plan
10:29 am
that includes measures meant to undermine obamacare. it's the latest in a ramped-up game of political hot potato. the tick-tock toward shutdown inches closer... with little compromise in sight. cristina mutchler has the latest developments from a busy weekend session for congress. in a saturday vote, the house approved a revised spending plan that includes.... a year delay of the affordable care act repeal of the medial device tax funding of the government until dec. 15 the military to be paid in case of a shutdown. the new counteroffer was forged by house speaker john boehner and his republican caucus.. to appease conservative opposition to obamacare. let's postpone it for a year. that's what this is all about. will you accept the compromise? the house has now volleyed the prevention of a government shutdown back to the senate -- which could wait until monday to take up the measure. senate democrats have stated any changes to the bill they passed friday, which funds both the goverment and
10:30 am
obamacare would be a non- starter. senate majority leader harry reid said saturday, the house strategy was "pointless." "we are still at square one. republicans must decide whether to pass the senate's clean cr, or force a republican government shutdown....the american people will not be extorted by tea party anarchists." the white house is also voicing frustration. a statement by the press secretary... "republicans in congress had the opportunity to pass a routine, simple continuing resolution that keeps the government running for a few more weeks. but instead, republicans decided they would rather make an ideological point by demanding the sabotage of the health care law....." the president says he would veto the house plan. past government shutdowns have disrupted the economy. this shutdown would, too...knock it off, pass a budget, and move on. as the divide continues, and the possibility of a government shutdown looms, another partisan showdown is on the horizon. the deadline to raise the nation's debt ceiling is october 17th. i'm cristina

mutchler reporting, from atlanta three women three women have been charged with robbing a bank in essex. it happened friday afternoon at the baltimore county savings bank on eastern boulevard. police say two of the women handed the teller a note implying they had a bomb. the teller turned over the money and the women drove off ....only to be stopped by police shortly thereafter. one of the women has also been charged with a bank robbery that happened the previous day and investigators are looking into the possiblity that the trio may be linked to other robberies in the area. a florida woman is making it her mission to warn others about the dangers of a particular predator. she believes a type of lizard ate her cat. this is called a "nile monitor"... they're native to africa, but have taken up home in the cape coral area of florida. experts say full grown ones can get to be six to nine feet long.

angie newman says a lizard similar to that one killed her beloved cat, boo-boo. "we woke up and found kitty hair all over my driveway and ditch and then later i found the rest of my kitty on my neighbors yard, or what was left of him." "these animals will use those claws to dig into a carcass that's three times their size and they'll just go to eating the insides right out." newman says she's letting the public know about what happened to her 12-year-old cat in hopes of preventing other animal lovers from going through what she has. in connecticut... a woman says her very devoted pet helped save her life. candace lines was eating a chicken dinner when a piece got lodged in her throat. she couldn't talk and started to choke. lines say she pointed to her herman shepherd, samantha, and then to her medical alert device. while bringing the device to her owner, the dog triggered the alarm, alerting
10:33 am
the monitoring company. someone immediately called lines, but while she couldn't speak, samantha did... with a fierce bark. "they knew it wasn't a fake bark it was something actually going on." lines says this isn't the first time samantha saved her... three years ago she fell in the backyard... and her devoted dog kept barking until someone found her. a big day at the baltimore zoo as about a thousand people showed up to run to support pathfinders for autism. winners for the "run wild for autism" race just received their awards. amber miller was handing them out... she's streaming live from the zoo ...amber...the race is over but the fun just continues. the race begins at 8-30 this morning. and an awards ceremony wil follow where the winners will be announced---and there will also be fun door prizes.

at ninety years young! amid old- fashioned doughnuts pops an old-fashioned love story. "he is a romantic." filled with apple fritters and butterflies. "butterflies and the fact that i really didn't sleep much last night." nervous gladys salley never thought she'd marry again, not in a port angeles doughnut shop and not at age 90. "never i've been a widow 17 years." but then she met andy nilles. "i actually introduced gladys and andy cause she didn't have a ride somewhere and i said i bet andy will do it." andy is 93 and considered quite the catch at their apartment complex for seniors in sequim. "there was a lot of 'em after me, i'll have to admit that." after morning walks to mcdonald's and trips to the doughnut shop he knew his southern sweetie was the one.
10:43 am
"my phone takes the same charger as hers does and hers is from clear back in louisiana and mine is from out here so we figured if the phones got together, we will just get together." a rancher and harley rider back in the day, andy's proposal crushed a few hearts. "he said i can't kneel down, i can't get back up. "i might make it down but never get back up without help." the early bird wedding at cock-a-doodle doughnuts surprised friends who watched the courtship. "well we didn't see the wedding coming, but we certainly saw the courtship developing -- all of a sudden they were holding hands. she had her walker, he had his cane, and, pretty soon, they didn't have either one, they just had each other." 'til death do us part... andy figures that's at least another six years. "it'll mean when you wake up at night and feeling kind of sad or by the end of i nd." do's, the groom didn't waste a minute. "... i now pronounce you husband and wife." he shared an apple fritter with the apple of his eye before heading for their

"...all this stuff for a couple of old people getting married, don't believe it!" after the honeymoon, andy is moving up two floors into gladys' place. he says after all the third floor is closer to heaven. fox45 is committed to bringing you stories that are meaningful and impact your lives. that's why we're asking for your help in shaping the type of newscast you'd like to see. go to our website and take our news survey. there you'll be able to give us your thoughts on eleven different categories. to get started go to foxbaltimore dot com slash survey.... or click on "news survey" under hot topics on foxbaltimore dot com. coming up... terrence jenkins... is no stranger to the spotlight. learn about the actor and t-v host's newest project... and find out where you can see him... today! i'm marty stouffer. over the centuries, animals evolved defense mechanisms which allowed them to succeed in their respective environments. nature has cleverly made this point with one cumbersome mammal-- the porcupine. the slow but surefooted porcupine is world-renowned for one thing: its quills. they are certain to be uncomfortable and, in some cases, deadly to any unlucky recipient. this prickly vegetarian may have as many
10:57 am
as 30,000 quills. once driven into flesh, a quill will continue to work deeper and will eventually work its way right through if not quickly removed. the porcupine is one of our largest rodents. it's second in size only to the beaver, and although its notorious reputation as a spiny nuisance precedes it as surely as its quills bring up the rear, there is still much more to discover about the prickly porcupine. controversy has surrounded the porcupine ever since we humans began occupying much of its woodland habitat. it may come as a surprise that the porcupine didn't get its name because it dines on pine trees, but from the latin word for swine
10:58 am
and the french word for thorn-- hence its undignified nickname, quill pig. even today, the porcupine is unpopular with some people-- not just because it can damage trees, but because it also chews on gloves, shoes, canoe paddles, gun butts, rubber tires, and ax handles. porcupines can be seen at any time of the day, but they're most active at night.
10:59 am
the porcupine is not intentionally destructive. it's simply trying to locate a source of sodium-- in this case, salt from human sweat. the tree bark, leaves, and plants a porcupine ingests contain massive amounts of potassium. in order to rid its body of excess potassium, its kidneys also flush out essential sodium. sodium cravings are the most intense in pregnant or nursing females and can result in particularly risky behavior. this female porcupine is challenging the most dangerous predator in her environment--
